Use of Advertising

Two of the primary methods of identifying Steuben Glass are by color and shape. There are 140+ colors, which help identify Carder’s Steuben glass. As you’ve seen from past discussion that can be quite subtle. Correspondingly, there are some 7,000 documented shapes to help with the process. Sometimes the identification process can be quite difficult. So, clues are looked for. Usually, Aurenes are factory marked with a shape number which can positively identify a shape which might apply to a non-Aurene shape. Another means can be advertisements placed in the 1920s. As identified the other day advertisements frequently include shape numbers that can be quite helpful. There are now advertisements included in the Carder Steuben Club website that can be referred to. www.cardersteubenclub.org

In addition our webmaster, Marshall Ketchum has cross indexed them in the shape index for respective shapes. See discussion on opposite side of the page.

Website Growth

Alan

We have made a modification to the website that involves a search function for the new Advertising section. If you do a normal shape number search and that number happens to be shown in the Advertising section there will be a note to that effect on the drawing page for that number. For example, if you search on shape 6030 and look at the drawing page there will be a note in the Description of “See Website Advertising Section 4 Page 5.”

Factory Record Mysteries

Alan

There is a mystery associated with the Advertising section. If you look at Page 6 of the Hand Wrought Glass booklet (Section 3) there is a 2839 bowl with a Buddha and flower block in the bowl. The shape number of the Buddha in the description is 3269. The Buddha seems to be the same as number 7133. The factory records mention a Buddha associated with number 3269 but the only drawing is for the flower block as shown in Gardner. Shape 3269 was probably designed about 1915 and the two Buddhas associated with numbers 6721 and 7133 were designed about 10 years later. It may have been that the 7133 Buddha had been in existence for a long time and had been associated with the 3269 number and it was only later that it was associated number 7133.
