Issue 2728
Yesterday, John Styler asked; I have a collection of Steuben Cigarette urns #7734. All are 2 1/2″ tall, except one is 2 3/4″ tall. It also has fancier handles like the #7734 Selenium red shown on our website; with a foot note “Pairpoint also made a similar object”. Should I remove it from the group and hide it someplace?
Bobby Rockwell responds to John’s question. ‘I don’t think that I would be in a hurry to do that. I believe that you may have two different Steuben shapes that you are dealing with here and I think that both shapes were done during the interm period between the old and the new. The urn pictured on the left is without doubt the 7734. I have that shape in both a sel. red and a clear and both are signed Steuben. The small handled urn on the right may very well be a take-off of shape 7674. Paul Gardner labeled it as a champagne cooler which might have been a guess on his part because in my drawings the design has no assigned use. That’s not to say that that was its function, my drawings are blank. Steuben could just as well made that shape in a smaller size and just not mentioned it. Well known at the time not known years later. The purpose of course is to drive us all nuts trying to figure it out.”
Jan Baer offered to answer the question by offering ” I think you should hide it in my home, along with any other Pairpoint, Stevens & Williams and Galle pieces you may have obtained by mistake.”
