CONTINUED DISCUSSION ABOUT ADDING MODERN STEUBEN TO THE CLUB’S MISSION
We are laying the foundation for expanding our mission but have not yet taken any action that involves any significant expenditure. Steps that have already been taken include:
We have obtained permission to use line drawings and pictures of Modern Steuben from Corning, Inc., which re-acquired the rights to Steuben’s intellectual property from Schottenstein when Steuben closed. We are also working with the Rakow Library so that we will be able use material in their archives if we proceed with this effort.
We have begun a dialog with MJ Madigan, author of “Steuben Glass An American Tradition” looking toward having her assist in our efforts. MJ (as she prefers to be called) was involved in writing marketing material for Steuben for many years, and has an extensive archive on Modern Steuben. MJ is also going to give a talk on Modern Steuben at the Symposium.
We have developed specifications for the changes to our website and database that would be needed to accommodate Modern Steuben, and have gotten a cost estimate for that work from our website developer.
In short, we are preparing to add Modern Steuben to our mission but have not yet begun construction.

TEA PARTY–WHAT ELSE?
I thought it was interesting to hear John Styler tell about the upcoming “tea party” for his granddaughter’s wedding.
It made me wonder if other collectors might have used anything from their collection for a special occasion or even everyday and if they were willing to share with the rest of us.
We use our lamps daily in our living room, but the rest of our collection is just displayed, not used.

SCAM REPORT
Well my ebay scam story goes like this. I bought a beautiful and expensive piece of glass from a dealer in Texas for what I thought was still a very reasonable price. It was shipped to my place in Florida which is where my father was at the time. When he unwrapped it the piece was in pieces but looked suspicious to him. He has a very sharp eye even at 82 years old and blind in one of them! I started the process of a claim when he calls me and says “Son, I have had a chance to look this piece over more closely and this piece was broken before it was shipped. I have found traces of glue that had been expertly applied.” The seller tried to accuse my father of having broken it and refused to deal with me any further. Thank god for insurance or I would have been out thousands and the seller would have the last laugh. The worst part of this is that seller was right back selling with no ramifications whatsoever. I was fuming mad as you can imagine! I couldn’t even leave feedback! We so desperately need a new powerful enough player in this field! Especially for antiques but almost just as much in other areas like clothing and electronics where there is a ton of misrepresentation!
