I was saddened to learn that Jay Doros, a long-time friend and passionate glass collector passed away on Friday, May 4. Jay and Micki, his wife for 71 years were Fellows of the Corning Museum. Jay and his son Paul have each spoken at Carder Steuben Club Symposiums, as well as many other CMOG and other glass-related events. They started the Westchester Glass Club Show and ran it for many years.

Micki and Jay were long-time collectors who were tutored by Minna Rosenblatt, a great dealer who specialized in Tiffany. Although the Doros were generally known as Tiffany collectors, they collected many other makers and types of glass including Steuben, Quezal, Victorian and cut glass; always buying the finest examples available. They also collected ephemera about glass and glass making and were active supporters of the Rakow Library.
When I was starting out as a collector-dealer Jay gave me some advice that I have since passed on to many collectors. He said you should try to handle as many pieces as you can, so that you learn feel, weight and texture. To quote Jay, “The person who has handled a thousand pieces knows more than the person who has handled a hundred, but doesn’t know nearly as much as the person who has handled ten thousand pieces.”

There are few if any collectors who combined Jay’s eye with his deep intellect and interest in glass. He will be missed.
