Royal Purple

Light or Dark

from Rande Bly of Birmingham, AL

I wanted to identify Royal Purple using factory records. I will stay to the point. Royal Purple is what we know as dark amethyst. From what I understand the formula for Royal Purple lists manganese as the sole ingredient. There are hundreds of pieces in this color. There is no formula for light or dark amethyst and even though those two terms show up on Gardner’s color list p 59. They were not official Steuben names.

Royal Purple will be found in combination with Amber, or Clear Crystal. or as a solid color. My favorite photo of a Royal Purple grouping is Gardner color plate XXVIII. All of the pieces shown are Royal Purple and the stems on the candlesticks are Amber, not Topaz.

Here are the photos. Shapes 2958 and 3093 and line drawing only for 2996.
