It could have been drilled on the bottom. It would depend on what the customer wanted at the time. Carder was well aware that it was important to increase sales and not rest on artistic pride. If a customer came to him or a salesman and stated that instead of having the holes drilled in the rim, they needed to have a single hole drilled in the bottom, it was done. This might have been noted on a drawing or sales receipt or perhaps not at all leaving us 100 years later scratching our heads.

This shade could have been done both ways depending on the electrical mounting put in the home. This shade would have been sold through and electrical company for installation for the home owner. Beth Shaut

The three drilled holes were for suspension. If there is a hole drilled in the bulbous bottom area, it is most likely for a decorative brass finial which would coincide with the design of the hanging fixture.
