Elizabeth and Frank Creech of Brevard, North Carolina, who both delighted us at our Symposium with their exquisite collection of perfume bottles send this along.
Dear Alan,
Further regarding cutting, engraving and etching at Carder’s Steuben:
The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG), GLASS, A Pocket Dictionary, is available at their bookstore and on their website. It presents concise and reliable definitions of terms.
Paul V. Gardner, THE GLASS OF FREDERICK CARDER, pp. 95-120, discusses and illustrates the techniques of cutting, engraving and acid etching as practiced by the factory at Carder’s Steuben.
Harold Newman, AN ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY OF GLASS, provides clear definitions of cutting, engraving and etching glass. This excellent reference is quite useful in learning about various aspects of glassmaking and glassmakers.
For those seeking a greater depth of understanding regarding the many techniques of glassmaking, see Ruth Hurst Vose, GLASS—The Connoisseur Illustrated Guides.
REMEMBER:
· Research is truly exhilarating—the thrill of the chase.
· Discovery is fun—like digging a nugget from a gold mine.
· Knowledge is more than power—it expands your appreciation of what you care about.
Go for it, ya’ll!
All the best,
Elizabeth and Frank Creech
