First, let me thank the many of you who inquired if Susan & I were okay following the earth quake near Evansville, IN. Well, the answer is we were both in San Diego at the time. Now that we’re home I can also report no physical damage to the house nor the Carder Steuben collection.

Moving on. In prior e-mails I reported on coming to know Carol Kalinich. Her father was the
photographer at CMoG for many years. Carol reported meeting Mr. Carder as a girl of 5 and has offered to participate in that part of the Symposium when we do an oral history of those who knew Mr. Carder and report on those experiences.
Carol called my attention to a spectacular picture of Mr. Carder that her father took. It then became the March 1952 cover of the Gaffer magazine. See p. 196 Dimitroff (Fig. 8.53) Well, that led to my curiosity. Yes, there in Dimitroff’s book is this magazine cover. But, what is behind the cover?
So, I contacted The Rakow Library at CMoG. Sure enough, in less than a day I received a pdf of the cover and the full article. Education & Outreach Librarian, Regan Brumagen, sent along the pdf attachment to this e-mail. She states that it “looks like a magazine story on the exhibition done on Carder by the Museum in 1952 (curated by Thomas Buechner). ” A lovely story and great accompanying pictures. I suspect some who receive this will go through these pictures with a fine tooth comb and will find an image that will add to their body of knowledge, or confirm a design or shape.

Since the magazine is produced by Corning Glass Works I have asked and received permission to reproduce this for this e-mail list. Please note, however, that “reprints or re-distribution of this material without the expressed written consent of Corning Incorporated is prohibited”. The point of all this is research can be made easy through The Rakow Library. They are delighted to help. All you need is a little curiosity and to ask for help.
