Play of Light – The Glass Lamps of Frederick Carder

When the Rakow Library at the Corning Museum of Glass adds a book to its core collection it generally purchases two copies. The first copy, referred to as a “preservation copy,” is stored in secure stacks and is for use in the library and in curatorial offices only. The second copy is placed in the general circulation collection and is available for use by the general public without restriction. The Library also allows these copies to circulate as part of the interlibrary loan service. The theory behind the preservation copy collection is that these books would remain safe and constitute the core of the Library’s collection should anything happen to the copies of the books in general circulation. (As an aside, the Rakow Library was kind enough to arrange a tour of the preservation copy collection for attendees at the Carder Steuben Symposium in 2011).

In some instances, only single copies of core publications were initially obtained by the Library. The Library has a long-term preservation copy project to acquire publications for which it has only single copies. I have learned that there are several Carder Steuben publications that are on the Library’s long-term preservation copy project acquisition list. One of those publications is the exhibition catalog from the 1991 Rockwell Museum exhibition entitled “Play of Light – The Glass Lamps of Frederick Carder.” The exhibition catalog was published as a soft-cover catalog and as a limited edition hard-cover catalog. I would like to obtain a copy of either the soft-cover or the hard cover copy of the catalog for the Library’s preservation copy collection.
