Gerry Eggert of Syracuse reports on CMoG and Corning.

Alan,

The CMOG was filled with Chinese and Japanese tourists yesterday afternoon. I also went to the Carder Gallery and it was empty.

I bought a couple of pieces of clear Steuben-50% off. I was told once the stock was depleted all new glass would come from Portugal. I saw some of the new colored glass. It looks like Carders “smoke” color. The same shapes as the clear. Apparently the colored is still made in Corning.

I saw David and congratulated him on his “retirement”. It would be nice if the Club could do something for him at our Annual Meeting in September. Donate a nice piece of “ancient”glass to CMOG in his name? Or even a good piece of Steuben.

Just a suggestion.

Gerry

For those unaware of the stepping down of David Whitehouse as Director of CMoG and his successor, here are some parts of the press release.

After almost 30 years at The Corning Museum of Glass, Dr. David Whitehouse is transitioning out of his role as the Museum’s Executive Director. Dr. Karol Wight, longtime Curator and leader at The Getty in Los Angeles, will assume the role of Executive Director of The Corning Museum of Glass on August 15.

Dr. Wight is a long-time friend of the Museum’s (as you may recall, she and Dr. Whitehouse co-curated the exhibition, Reflecting Antiquity. She has been a Curator at The Getty for 27 years and is a highly respected glass scholar. She has been a Curator at The Getty for 27 years and is a highly respected glass scholar.

Dr. Whitehouse, his staff, and the Museum’s leadership team were all unanimous in the choice of Dr. Wight as the next Executive Director of the Museum.
