Now, from Mark Chamovitz of Pittsburgh on his reflections on the closing of Steuben.

Hi Alan,

It’s Mark Chamovitz here. I have been reading the posts recently about how folks came to love Carder Steuben. I’m sure that most of the folks that read the gazette have already heard my story at past symposiums regarding my acquisition of my pride and joy acid cut back vase. The reason that I am sending you this correspondence is regarding the closing of Steuben. This is a very sad time in Corning. I couldn’t help but think about Bob Rockwell, and was grateful that he did not have to see this day, because Bob loved Carder Steuben, and post Carder Steuben. When I was young, I can remember my father, who was one of those doctor’s who worked mostly sixteen hour days, taking some time for himself, and watching the CBS Sunday morning show. Those were the early years some three decades ago, where Charles Kuralt was the moderator. Actually, my father closely resembled Mr. Kuralt. Anyhow, after hearing about the impending closure of Steuben, I couldn’t help but remember the earlier years of Sunday morning when they did segments on art and artists. I recently sat down and sent an email off to the show’s producers and sent a suggestion for them to consider doing a segment on their show about the history of Steuben, starting with Carder in 1903. I thought that this would be the time to do it. I feel that the story needs to be told to a national audience. Steuben has been a driving force in the art world for over a century, and America needs to hear the story. I hope someone in New York at CBS agrees with me.

Regards, and I’ll see you next week,
