POST-CARDER REQUEST

Jul 25, 2013
Issue 1781

Alan and All –

Working on a manuscript about American Mid-Century Modern (AMCM) glass to be published in 2014. I wish to place Steuben (yes, I know- post Carder But…) in that body of work.

For my purposes: Mid Century = 1945-1973 and Modern = design that rebels against that which came before it.

I would appreciate any suggestions of pieces that Steuben chasers suggest as “best” examples of AMCM Steuben.

Appreciatively,

CONTINUING RESPONSES

Hi, I am a new cardersteubenclub member as of june 2013. I have been an avid admirer of carder steuben glass for 20 yrs. selling art glass as a antique dealer in Milwaukee, but now collecting for personal collection in the past 3 years. I have enjoyed your website immensely. my question is if I am not able to attend 2013 symposium in New York, can I still vote concerning the issue of changing the bylaws to which adding modern steuben glass to be included in the website as an absentee voter?

Thank you,

Bruce Henderson, Milwaukee, WI

RESPONSE

I received this email this morning and directed him to our By-laws which seem to state that only those in attendance can vote.

I wonder if we have not skewed the results of the voting in a way that may not be advantageous. If I read the By-laws correctly where only those who attend the Symposium, actually the business meeting, can vote then how the Club operates is governed by those who live near Corning, to those who have the financial means to attend the meeting and to those who just show up. The quorum is only 10% of the membership so we have the other 90% being governed by the 10%. I had not looked at the situation from that aspect before. Certainly it is easier to handle the business meeting if we have only those in attendance voting. The other choice would seem to be to put together the major items to be voted on and conduct voting by mail. We have to have a mailing in any case. Even if the return were small we have given the other 90% the opportunity.
