Grouping of Rose Cluthra Items Shaded to White
Cased Lead Glass
· Pair of Candlesticks
· Vase
· Finger Bowl and Underplate
· Cologne with Colorless Stopper
· Three prong Vase with Colorless Foot
The set of Rose Cluthra shaded to White pieces illustrates the variety of effects achieved with this technique.
Technical Note: Cluthra, pronounced “clooth(ra) to rhyme with tooth” or “cloth(ra) to rhyme with doth”, is a type of glass developed by Frederick Carder. Encased between two layers of glass is a combination of powdered and crushed glass with a “chemical” known to Mr. Carder to provide a desired bubble effect. Simply put the bubbles would move the inner layer of glass around forming a variety of organic shapes and distorted visual effects.
