Paperweights

An interesting fact I learned yesterday. Last year our website www.cardersteubenclub.org added over 700 new and additional images of Carder Steuben glass. Between pictures and factory shapes there are over 7,000 images on the website to assist collectors of Mr. Carder’s creations. And, it and discoveries keep growing.

Next, Scott Hansen of Briarcliff Manor, New York sends along this information on paperweights:

Shortly before Christmas last year (Gazette #1357 on 12/22/11), Bob Weinberg (owner of the Carder Steuben Shop in Corning, NY) passed along an appeal from Mitch and Ben Clark (owners of L. H. Selman, Ltd., a paperweight dealer and auction house now located in Chicago, IL) soliciting responses to a derogatory article the Chicago Tribune had published about the Rubloff Paperweight Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. Bob stated he was going to send a note to the authors of the article and the Chicago Tribune. Obviously in response to this appeal, the Tribune published a follow-up article in which they noted that over 300 people worldwide had responded to Mitch and Ben’s appeal and expressed their thoughts to the Tribune about the Rubloff Collection as well as paperweights as an art form.

Selman has published some of these letters to the Tribune in their glass blog which can be accessed from the home page of their web site www.selman.com. Bob’s letter is published there as is a note from Dwight Lanmon, a former Director of the Corning Museum of Glass and a former President of the Rockwell Museum.

On a personal note, I can recommend a stop at the Rubloff Paperweight Collection if you find yourself in the Art Institute of Chicago and Selman is located just a short 3 block walk south of the Art Institute. The last time I stopped there they even had some of Max Erlacher’s work in their inventory.
