Nearing the end of the series of Carder Steuben glass exhibited at the University of Southern Indiana, Susan Colaricci Sauls, Art Collection Registrar developed labeling for this gem.

Faceted Crystal Paperweight Style Cologne Bottle with Pink to Blue Shaded Cintra Internal Decoration and Controlled Bubbles

Lead Crystal

This rather large and substantially weighted cologne bottle involves several of Fredrick Carder’s popular effects including Cintra, casing, and bubbles. Bubbles bothered many glassmakers but Carder is quoted as saying that they “gave life to the metal.” The bubbles in this cologne bottle are controlled into a pattern that creates a prism around the cintra glass effect.

Technical Note: Cintra glass was created by rolling molten crystal glass over colored powdered glass and then encasing it in a layer of clear crystal. This casing gave the effect that the color particles were floating. Carder gave this technique the name Cintra from the verb “sinter”, meaning formed into a mass by heat and pressure.
