Frank Ford raised the question about the confusion over terms New Intarsia, Intarsia and an Intarsia collar.

The Club’s webmaster, Marshall Ketchum, answers.

Alan

The page in the factory records that includes shape 786 through 790 has a heading that says “New Intarsia Ware Green Leaves & Stems on Irad. Ground”. Since this page is from about 1905 (the page starting shape 1000 is dated Dec. 1905) it appears that New Intarsia was made very early and it is unclear if there ever was an “old” Intarsia. The page for shapes 791 through 794 is headed by just “Intarsia”.

Carder used the name Intarsia in three different ways. The first was for New Intarsia http://www.cardersteubenclub.org/shapes/item-view.cfm?RecordID=18178 , the second is for glass that was made in the 1920s and is the more familiar form of Intarsia http://www.cardersteubenclub.org/shapes/item-view.cfm?recordID=24533&back=1 and had a much more complex manufacturing process and finally he used the word to describe a boarder for primarily shades and vases http://www.cardersteubenclub.org/shapes/item-view.cfm?recordID=24263&back=1.

Then Gerry Eggert, of Rochester, New York reports on New Intarsia sightings.

Alan,

I had found 2 pieces years ago. One is in the Carder Gallery @ CMOG and the other is in a private collection. I have seen none in the past 15 years, though.
