Issue 594
Susan & I spent the weekend in NYC visiting our son. Haven’t been there in quite a few years. Well, when in mid town Manhattan, what does one do? If you’re a glass collector you head down 58th Street and to Madison Avenue. So, my first stop was Lillian Nassau. I know they’re a famous Tiffany dealer, but they must have Steuben; right? Well, I asked and the next thing I know I was down in the catacombs. However, that’s where they store clear Steuben. Clarification. I collect Carder Steuben. They only have three pieces in the entire store. Yes, they’re really a Tiffany dealer, and yes the Tiffany is quite the treat to see. They referred me to the Steuben store on Madison and 61st. They have Carder’s Steuben, but they don’t know where much other Carder Steuben can be found. Seems like in NYC, Frederick Carder isn’t all that important. So sad for one of the great American glass makers, but that seems to be the case in NYC. We stopped at several other shops in the area and much the same response. Anyhow, here is a picture of Lillian Nassau’s Doris Zuckman in front of a photograph of a Tiffany Mosaic with me, the original of which can be found in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum.
More to come as we move to the Steuben Store on Madison Avenue.
