Issue 1673

We’ve received some notices from our hosting service for the Gazette, Constant Contact, that some on our mailing list have unsubscribed. There is a place on each of the Gazette’s allowing a “safe” unsubscribe for those who don’t wish to continue to receive the Gazette. We’ve learned that in some cases those people didn’t unsubscribe. As best we can figure out if your spam catcher picks up a Gazette, that in turn, Constant Contact will treat that as an unsubscribe since they don’t send out our messages where not welcomed. e.g. spam catcher rejection. So, if you should notice that you’re not receiving the Gazette for several days running you should respond to an old e-mail, or go to our website to report you haven’ received a Gazette so this can be addressed. I guess another thing you can do is make sure our address (ashovers@kddk.com) is in your address book.

MORE INFORMATION ON MODERN STEUBEN

In Tuesday’s Gazette Lon Knickerbocker opined that the following piece was not a modern Steuben piece.

Brent Wedding of Corning adds to this: “I agree with you. The 2 Steuben versions are 7985 (1949) which is 5″ high and 8020 (1951) which is 6 5/8” high.

As you point out, it doesn’t look “right” either.”

and Lon Knickerbocker responds:

“Brent,Thanks for the comments, many companies made these “standard” shapes and so often they get attributed to the wrong company.”

CONTROLLED BUBBLES

Yesterday’s Gazette raised questions about whether this piece with controlled bubbles is Carder Steuben. Lon Knickerbocker of Dansville, New York adds his comments.

“I have some thoughts on the Redlands #31 blue controlled bubble item. First – this could be a goblet top as 3 3/4 across is the measurement of many of Steuben’s champagne goblets although I don’t think this is the case. The piece is very shiny and typically Steuben’s late colors with bubbles such as French blue and Spanish green are not shiny. This shiny finish with controlled bubbles is typical of both Czech. and Italian glass and this blue was done by both. If Italian it probably took a lid and was some sort of dresser piece, this could also be the case with a Czech. piece. If the base has a pontil and it is hazy or unpolished it is almost assuredly Italian or Czech. If I could see the base I could tell for sure.”
