A Classicist

Alan,

Carder was a classicist in his approach to glass. His approach to Art Nouveau and Art Deco was somewhat restrained. Art Nouveau and Art Deco Decorations were, many times, added to classically inspired forms. Looking at Bonnie Salzman’s Blue Aurene perfume, we see a very classic bottle shape with a wonderful Art Nouveau stopper. We see the same thing in David Sherwood’s vase, but this time with a great Art Deco Acid Etched design. Arguably, Carder didn’t seem to produce many forms that “screamed” Art Nouveau or Art Deco. His forays into these movements was done in decoration.

One of my favorite pieces is the candlestick shown. Carder was less restrained with this form. The tulip shaped candle socket, the wrapping leaf decoration, the ribbed domed foot, and even the central stem of the candlestick all have a wonderful organic feel, characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement.
