“Tiffany Mosaics at The Corning Museum of Glass”. This exhibit runs from May 20, 2017 through January 7, 2018. Those attending the annual Carder Steuben Club symposium, co-sponsered with CMoG in September will have the opportunity to enjoy this exhibit.

David Donaldson responds

Hi Alan,

I guess the CMoG will miss this one, so you folks should not. It is monogrammed by Joseph Briggs, Tiffany’s Business manager and dated 1901; and entered in (The Pan-American Exposition was a World’s Fair held in Buffalo, New York, United States, from May 1 through November 2, 1901.) Briggs did not paint well, but was a master with mosaic art, so he entered the below. It appears to be an oil painting when viewed at 20 feet, and has impeccable detail. This was acquired from Joseph Briggs, Jr. and now is in my collection.

I was also involved as an expert witness for the Marion estate in the Parrish / Tiffany Dream Garden law suit in Philly some years back. Mosaics have always been a favorite area of mine ever since I got to know Robert Brill at the Corning Museum when I worked there.

Cheers,

David P. Donaldson, MFA
