More on the “Steuben” Plate

The Carr China Company of Grafton, WV operated from 1916 to 1952. They provided china to hotels, restaurants, steamships, railroads, clubs, institutions, and the military. This particular pattern was distributed by the Ideal Restaurant Supply Company of NY, and the pattern was named for them. With respect to Jan Bevan’s comments, there are lots of reference to Baron Von Steuben in Wisconsin, and I attended Steuben Junior High in Milwaukee. Wisconsinites have always said it the way the Baron pronounced it, which is not the way the of the western New Yorkers. But then it gives my CSC friends an opportunity to correct me on a regular basis.

There was a chain of Steuben Taverns restaurants named for Major General Frederich Wilhelm Agust Hendrich Fernand von Steuben, plate attached; who the heck he was; still trying to find out where Lisa’s find is from.

Years ago there was a private German Steuben Club in Chicago with 15,000 members, they built a huge club building at 188 Randolph after 30 years it was demolished, I think because it was too close to city hall and membership diminished.

Now see how I spend my time!
