MORE ON STEUBEN IDENTIFICATION

Next Up from Joann Tortarolo

This is HGM Steuben No 12. It is described as a 5″ Steuben bowl with a scalloped rim in alabaster and is unmarked.

Marshall Ketchum says:
This probably wasn’t made by Steuben. While the colors look like Steuben anybody who made lamp shades could make this. I have seen a number of these over the years and have never been able to find a shape that fit well.

Joan’s Word to the Wise

We are not done with all of the pieces as of yet! (Ed. there are about 40 more) I thought I would share with you an article from the local Redlands newspaper that explains what happened with this donation. According to the newspaper article, there were between 40 and 50 difference pieces in this “Steuben” collection that we are determining are not all Steuben. I know it is rather overwhelming!

This is why collectors are being urged to identify the pieces of their collection while they are still around to do so! 🙂 Of course, this assumes that the collector knows what they are collecting….

One More From Joann Tortarolo

This is HGM Steuben No 13. It is described as a 7″ Tazza in amber, unmarked. I did some research on the Carder Steuben website, and I think it is Compote #5194 with reeding?

Marshall Ketchum says:

I think this is a 6405 rather than a 5194. The 6405 has a disc at the top of the stem that the 5194 doesn’t have. The 6597 is somewhat similar but because of the height and the shape of the bowl I think it is a 6405.

Marshall Ketchum’s Corner

Steuben shape 938 is not often seen reeded. This one is 7 in high and is in Bristol Yellow and is reeded in Mirror Black. This shape was made in a great variety of sizes and colors as well as various engraved and acid etched patterns. Shape 938 was made in odd sizes of 5 in, 7 in, 9 in, 11 in and 13 inches. It should be noted that shape 938 was made in a shade without the foot and also the shade was converted into a “shade vase” in about 1932.
