MORE ON DISCERNING FORGERIES
Jim Barlow, of Detroit, and one of the original creators of cardersteubenclub.com, the Club website sends this along for your consideration.
Scott Hansen mentioned that there is a guide to fake signatures up on the club website. This is true. However, when a new fake signature never known to have been forged before emerges it is not possible to put that image on the website until someone buys the piece, get$ burned, and then submits the photo of the faux signature to the website for inclusion. Not a pleasant Catch 22! When I built the website, I assembled the current “fake signature” page. I find it unfortunate that the club is unable to do more via the website and the Gazelle Gazette in these cases, but it is understandable in today’s litigious society and I agree it is not something we should or would want to enter into the fray. However, I believe that a third party forum could and should be created outside of Carder Steuben Club to share opinions freely in these few instances where something new, remarkable, and paradigm changing is happening. I even think that Bruce Orr(whom I consider a friend) who is extremely versed in French Cameo would have loved to have seen the first piece of French Cameo to have been produced that would have slipped through seasoned collectors hands! Alan stating to look things over carefully is true! One added point to mention would be that if a piece has no wear on it and it is close to a 100 years old, that piece either rested in a box all of its life or it might truly be newly minted! Take care everyone, and Happy Hunting!Jim Barlow
