The Rockwell Museum in Corning had a monumental collection of Carder Steuben art glass numbering between two and three thousand pieces of glass on display until around the year 2000. The collection began with the personal collection of the Bob Rockwell family and grew through numerous subsequent gifts from supporters.
In 1988 The Rockwell Museum began a serial loose leaf publication, issuing periodically a sheet describing in some detail a specific favorite piece of glass selection. This publication called “Collector’s Choice Review”, grew with time as favorite pieces from the Carder collection were selected and members of the support group at the Museum “Friends of Carder” developed their description of a favorite piece of glass and provided background on the technique, or addressed the reasons a piece of Mr. Carder’s glass moved them. From 1988 through 1998 fifty-four of these selections were published and added to this loose leaf book.
Sometime around 2000 the Rockwell collection was moved from the Rockwell Museum and by loan displayed across the Chemung River in Corning, at the Corning Museum of Glass, in what is called Building “B”. Following this move of the Rockwell Collection the support group, “Friends of Carder” was dissolved.
The upshot of all this is that following the dissolution of the Friends of Carder an independent group was created to fill the void where the Friends of Carder left off. The result was creation of our “Carder Steuben Club” (CSC). Like its predecessor, CSC continues to hold an annual Symposium every September, close in time to Frederick Carder’s birthday. Likewise CSC continued the idea of publishing loose leaf sheets on a special piece of Mr. Carder’s craft. From 2003 until 2006 approximately 17 Collector’s Favorites were published. We’ve shared a number of the Collector Favorites in the Gazette over time and today we share by attachment another one.
