Issue 2993

Colorless lead glass; cast. Leaping gazelle; satin finish over all; incised in base of supporting tree stump: ” “; signed: “F Carder 1939”

This style of decorative grille was commissioned for the S.S. Andrea Doria, a transatlantic ship. Carder designed lighting grilles, wall panels, and a variety of other architectural elements in glass.

With John Monteith Gates, the sculptor Sidney Waugh developed a modern yet classical style for the new Steuben colorless glass. The first Gazelle Bowls were engraved by the master engraver Joseph Libisch (1886,1964).

Colorless lead glass; cast in an iron mold. Leaping gazelles atop swirling grass-like forms on a rectangular-shape base; polished base; wheel engraved on base: “F Carder”; marked on base with acid stamp: “Steuben”.
