Mission

The Carder Steuben Club expanded is mission to not only address Mr. Carder’s work, but Modern Steuben or, if you wish, Post Carder Steuben. Not much has been posted in the Gazette on Modern Steuben. That is because you, the readers, send very little commentary on it. So, keep that in mind and feel encouraged to send information on Modern Steuben.

STEUBEN ADVERTISING – Part Four

This is the last of the four photographs I have shared with models alongside pieces of Steuben. This is a Bergdorf Goodman advertisement which appeared on page 3 of the February 1, 1935 issue of Vogue Magazine. The photographer is Arthur O’Neill and the setting is “Courtesy of Steuben Glass.” While I am impressed with the shoulders on the dress, the glass is the important part of the ad. The gazelle (at least I think it is a gazelle) is Shape 7638 and the line drawing can be seen on page 236 in the Table Decorations and Accessories section of Gardner. There is no reference to the pedestal on which the gazelle sits. Two questions come to mind – First, where did this piece end up? Second, was Bergdorf trying to enhance its image by associating with Steuben or was Steuben trying to enhance its image by associating with Bergdorf?
