One-of-a-kind pieces
For anyone interested in modern Steuben, or for those who just like history, Jane Spillman has a fascinating presentation planned for the Carder Steuben Symposium entitled “Steuben Glass: State Gifts and Unique Pieces, 1947 – 2000.” For many years, Presidents of the United States have presented gifts of Steuben glass to rulers and heads of other countries upon visits to those countries or their visits to the U.S. In addition, there have been several royal wedding gifts, and celebratory gifts to countries. Jane will provide a fascinating look at these marvelous and in many cases, one-of-a-kind pieces.
The Carder Steuben Symposium will be held September 19 – 20 in Corning, NY. Program and registration details can be found at www.cardersteubenclub.org.

Black Amethyst – Steuben
Steuben’s shiny Black Amethyst is a violet red under a concentrated and intense light source. Examples are signed with the acid-etched Steuben signature and were probably produced during the ’20s and ’30s. Attractive compotes, perfumes, vases and candlesticks are some items made of glass. Black combined with Alabaster, ivory or Ivrene creates an outstanding decorator item. Also-called “Mirror Black,” this glass was acid-etched and could have rims trimmed in pink, blue or white.
