Meeting Frederick Carder

The Museum of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg, Florida held an exhibit, Steuben Glass: The Carder Years from September 30 through November 11, 1984. The Foreword from Michael Milkovich, Director of the Museum says in part:

“It was during my tenure as Curator at the Corning Museum of Glass in 1961 that I had the privilege of meeting Frederick Carder. During one of his visits to the museum, the ninety-eight-year-old master discussed with remarkable memory, the Diatreta pieces on which he had experimented and produced on a limited basis from around 1945 to 1959. The complex techniques needed in making this intricate glass involved casting and carving skills, which he himself had proudly executed.

“The present group of fifty-six catalog entries display almost every aspect of his activities from the early years in this century until his retirement, as well as the wide range of colors and unlimited imagination that characterize his entire oeuvre.

Experimentation throughout his long life was one of his hallmarks.”
