Issue 160
Some questions have arisen regarding tax deductions to the Club. So, here goes.
First, the Carder Steuben Club is a 501 (c)(3) organization. So, your membership
dues are tax deductible. Likewise, additional contributions. Cash contributions
are easy to understand. Contributions of glass for our auction should likewise be
deductible. Outright gifts of glass should be valued at their sale price. Gifts
where some part of the sale price is returned to the donor where the Club keeps
the balance would only be deductible to the extent of the net amount the Club
gets. For gifts of over $500 or gifts of property the Club needs to supply you a
written statement. This hasn’t been done yet, but is an administrative task we
need to get resolved soon. Part of our learning curve. Likewise, we are in
process of getting specialized insurance to cover glass put up for auction during
our Symposium.
With the loss of Joan Miller who was dear to so many Steuben collectors I found
the attached picture I took of Joan at the O’Hare show. Some may want to see
it.
I just returned from the Miami Airport Show and the Miami Beach antique
show. Lots of wonderful and exciting Carder glass to be seen. Always something
new you didn’t know existed. No, the Rockwell collection doesn’t have
everything. I took my camera. I meant to take pictures. However, I got so
excited seeing everything, I forgot. As I was leaving the Miami Beach show I
grab a shot before I left that you’ll see attached. Just sorry I didn’t take
more. I promised my wife I was just going to look–not buy. Fortunately, Susan
is quite forgiving.
The Symposium this Sept. 15 and 16 will be held at CMoG. Ed Bush is studying
largely untouched correspondence between Mr. Carder and J. Stanley Brothers
found at the Rakow and will report on it.
Anyone on this list who isn’t a member of the Club is urged to join. Applications
are attached. Remember that a membership in Carder Steuben Club gets you a
membership in CMoG as well. Covers admission, purchase discounts and their
quarterly magazine. A hard deal to turn down.
Finally, take a gander at our web site. Be certain to look at the Carder On Line
Drawing Index. Now that our webmaster, Mark Buffa has updated his computer
I’ve noted additions of new pieces on an almost daily basis. The data base keeps
growing and growing. www.cardersteubenclub.com
