IVRENE v. CALCITE v. ALABASTER v. FLINT WHITE

Nov 10, 2009
Issue 734

Several have written saying we need to not only compare calcite to alabaster to flint white, but don’t forget to throw in Ivrene to the mixture.

To get it started, here is the response from Rande Bly of Birmingham, Alabama
If we are to discuss Calcite I feel it is important to add Ivrene to the list to compare against Calcite. Especially when Calcite has been sprayed with the same Stannious Chloride method like Ivrene is. I had a pair of Acid Cut Back Calcite lampshades with the tin chloride spray that could easily be mistaken for Ivrene. At the time the only way I could tell the difference was to hold the lampshades to the light to look for the slight buttery cream color to the interior of the Calcite glass. From the surface they looked like Ivrene to me. From what I hear Calcite was the white color used in the pieces like the Decorated Red or Green Aurene. Does someone know if this is correct?
