ANNUAL AUCTION
At the IPBA convention Elizabeth and Frank Creech did a presentation as reported in Monday’s Gazette. Included in that presentation was an image of a magnificent cologne bottle with a crown top. This was created by Frederick Carder whle he was at Stevens & Williams. As I best recall (but I may need some correction) this was made (pre-1903) for Queen Mary. The cologne now resides in the Albert & Victoria Museum. It is in clear crystal.
Another matching cologne, but in cut to clear in amythst, resides in the Creech collection. Unfortunately I don’t have pictures, but perhaps the Creech’s will supply one.
Mr. Carder wasn’t finished with this magnificent cologne. After he came to the U.S., he produced another one for Steuben. (see the picture in the next column.)
Bristol Yellow & Pomona Green Crown Cologne
Shape #6450
6 1/2 inches high
After the Creech’s presentation I went to see the glass that would be auctioned, in the IPBA annual auction. To my amazement I saw what I thought at first must have been another Crown cologne of Mr. Carder’s. However, I shortly learned that it was Bohemian and a number of makers made Crown colognes. Sorry to say, it isn’t Mr. Carder’s work, but it also is magnificent.
2013 Carder Steuben Club annual Symposium will be held at The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY from September 19-21, 2013. The festivities will begin with Frederick Carder’s 150th birthday celebration on the evening of September 18, 2013.
