IDENTIFYING A CRUET MADE BY STEUBEN AND EMBLISHED BY HAWKES

REDLAND’S IDENTIFICATION CLINIC

This is HGM Steuben No 42. The label says that it is a Steuben 8″ cruet. It is unmarked and has a gilt shaped chased stopper. Could it be Steuben shape #3063?

Joann Tortarolo

I browsed all 79 of the cruets shown in the CSC shape index, and while there were a couple of them which were similar in shape (including the 3063 which you cited), I did not see one that had a body shape with this degree of concavity on the sides. That being said, it looks like Steuben V.d.S. to me. Perhaps the other guys (who are waaaaay more knowledgeable about Steuben than I) will know a shape number that may not be listed on the index or something? Perhaps it is a custom ordered shape made for a reseller such as Hawkes?

I’m sure that the top on it is sterling silver applied over glass. A little silver polish should return it to a silver color, rather than the brassy patina it has now.

Michael Krumme, Los Angeles

This is a bottle shape 3062 in Verre de Soie. Many of these were sold to Hawkes for engraving and were signed by Hawkes.

LALIQUE

Alan, I would like to comment on Leigh Demrow’s info.

While I am not familiar with Laliques practice for signing their work it seems to me that if the signature is on the side of the vase it would show intent it was to either be a vase or drilled as a lamp base.

If the vase is $15,000 show me the $1500 lamp and I’ll buy it!
