Green With Envy
Good morning Alan, title this ‘Green with Envy’ , ironic that we are talking about the “greens” on St. Patty’s Day! I think Carder did us no favors with all of these greens (many unidentified) and poor records of colors in general, we are still trying to figure out(100+ years later!) many colors including the 20+ greens listed in Gardner’s book and my hats off to all of those involved in this “Easter Egg” hunt of the listed (known) colors.. Many years ago Robert Rockwell Sr. gave me a little green wine and he called it ‘antique green’, I do not think it is ‘Window glass green or a Pomona green version’. It does ‘fluoresce’ as pictured. So, what is it? Also, I’m still out on the color ‘Celadon’ , my belief is Carder was trying to bring in the ‘Oriental’ colors to the fold with Rouge Flambe, Mandarin Yellow, Oriental Jade, Oriental Poppy, and Celadon. I think Carder was trying to copy the ‘Celadon’ color as seen in many oriental products that have an off white/green (light green tinge) celery like color. I’ve also included a picture of a Quan Yin lamp that I think is truly “Celadon”, the picture just shows the color difference to an Alabaster (white) flower frog, in person it is a “celery like’ color (green tint with no fluoresce). I also think the ‘side notes’ in the line drawings of Gardners book just confuse us all because someone (Gardner, Carder or WHO?) hand wrote or typed a note next to a drawing which may or may not be factual. Well, let’s all have fun with this,
Sincerely
