A recent Corning Museum of Glass blog post featured the Portland Vase.

Alas, for all of us reading the Gazette the most important fact surrounding the Portland Vase was omitted. The post didn’t quite go far enough. The Portland Vase was the object which inspired Frederick Carder’s career in glass (see both the Gardner and Dimitroff texts for discussions of the history and influence of the Portland Vase on Carder). During the Symposium (September 14-16), the Rakow Library will have on view its exhibit “Curious and Curiouser: Surprising Finds From the Rakow Library.” Materials related to the Portland Vase are included in the exhibit, including a ceramic copy of the Portland Vase.

However, for glass enthusiasts, the first successful glass replica of the Portland Vase might be more interesting. It’s on display in the 35 Centuries of Glass Gallery in the main Museum. This glass replica of the Portland Vase was a bequest to CMoG by Juliette Rakow from the cameo glass collection she shared with her husband, Leonard Rakow. The Rakow Research Library is named after Leonard and Juliette Rakow.
