Hawkes

Last week Jan Baer submitted several pictures of Water Lamps, several engraved by Hawkes. Bobby Rockwell responds:

Hi Alan,

Bobby here. If the question is why are Hawkes signatures on objects intended for someone else, I may be of some help on this. Hawkes bought much of the colored inventory after Steuben stopped the production of its colored line. They also did this when Sinclaire closed. Hawkes then could either add engraving or leave plain, but since they were sold through their shops they would stamp their trademark on them. This is why a person will find Hawkes signatures on Steuben and Sinclaire pieces. This was told to me by my great uncle Reggie Sinclaire.

Best,

Bobby Rockwell
