Betty Santandrea of Corning, NY sends along some additional information on the background of Hawkes and Steuben Glass Works.
Hawkes started Steuben in 1903 to control the source for blanks that his cutting firm used. Before that he got blanks from Corning Glass Works and other glass companies. He hired Carder to manage this new company: Steuben Glass. (See Wikipedia for history of the Steuben Co. In a nutshell.)
