HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Issue 684

Happy Birthday Mr. Carder. Yesterday, Sept. 18 (b. 1863) was the date of his 145th birthday. It’s been a tradition in Corning for many years, by Tom & Peetie Dimitroff, to sponsor an elegant birthday party at the Corning Country Club. This tradition brings out a good crowd. The theme for this year’s bash was “A Tribute to Bob and Hertha Rockwell”. We hope in coming days to get more information on this gala event. In the meantime Marshall Ketchum sends along these two photos.

Next, Brooklyn’s Tommy Dreiling sends this along.
As the book buyer for the antique and collecting books for Barnes & Noble I get to see advance manuscripts of forth coming books. Judith Miller has a new book coming in October called 20th Century Design. In the chapter on Art Deco she selected a beautiful Mirror Black over Green Jade ACB shape 6272 in the Indian pattern for a full page illustration. I think it’s great that Steuben is gaining more recognition and being included in more books other than Steuben specific books.
Here a link to the book.

Yesterday we showed a piece of glass that may be Cardinal Red that David Winfield sent along.

Lon Knickerbocker sends this information along.
I have owned 3 of these, 2 exactly like the one shown and one all red. These were made quite late as most are plain crystal. The all red example was very dark red, like a blood red and the other two were lighter, as the one in the picture shows. I believe they were selenium but who knows. The piece is not a whimsey, it was production, just late. These were signed with just a tiny s in the center, I would be surprised if Mr. Winfield’s small vase isn’t signed.

Finally, Symposium Chairman Scott Hansen advises that rooms still can be had in Corning if anyone still hasn’t reserved and would like to attend the Symposium.
