Neil Unger of Rolling Meadows, Illinois questions whether an item from Rande Bly’s analysis of green is actually a piece of Steuben:
Good Day :
I feel like a lone logger lost in a “forest of experts” regarding the topic of Steuben Colors…After looking at the photo of Steuben #5,,,, I wonder if indeed the item is indeed Steuben,,, and not Heisey’s 5 1/2″ Moongleam Diamond Optic #4157 Rose Bowl w/ Diamond optic as seen in this copy of Heisey Glass..This piece of course is blown number #225 on this page. Heisey started producing this color in 1925…
Now I am not stating that the Green Number #5 is not Steuben, but the similarity is striking….Of course, you all know back in the day, most the glass companies sometimes found it “convenient” to emulate colors and patterns as often as glass workers moved from glass factory to glass factory,, if you catch my drift…
Anyway, just my pause on the trail thru this Steuben Forest,, so excuse me while I continue to try and locate my way out of here, before the weather turns stormy.. Happy New Year
To all..Neil Unger
Rande Bly’s identification of Green #5 is shown in this picture from Gazette #1359.
