Alan –
The Grant Wood vase shown in Monday’s Gazette from the “Grant Wood: American Gothic and Other Fables” at the Whitney Museum of American Art (through June 10 – thank you Helaine Fendelman) was part of the Designs In Glass by Twenty-Seven Contemporary Artists Exhibition shown by Steuben Glass in 1940.
Attached is a scan of the photo of the vase from the Twenty-Seven Artists Exhibition catalog and below, as well, the description that accompanied the photo.
Madigan at page 250 of her book credits George Thompson as a co-designer of the vase. The exhibition catalog states that 6 copies of each of the twenty seven vases were made – one for Steuben’s permanent collection and the other five for sale. Here is a link to the Whitney Museum website for their exhibition. If you click on the “Prints, Illustrations and Commercial Projects” icon it will show a photo of the vase. Clicking on the vase will enlarge it and give some history of the vase.
