Give a Speech

Hello fellow CSC members,

Michael Krumme from Los Angeles here. I am a member of an informal glass collector’s club, “The Elegant Glass Collectors,” a group of people which evolved from what was formerly the Fostoria Glass Collectors, a local club which was in existence for about 17 years. We meet monthly in members’ homes, and sometimes in public locations, generally in the Orange County/Long Beach/San Fernando Valley areas. We are a diverse group which is generally united by our love of elegant American glassware from the Depression era. Most members collect tableware and decorative pieces made by companies such as Cambridge, Heisey, Duncan & Miller, Tiffin, etc. We also have some members who like EAPG, and art and Victorian glass such as Fry, Pairpoint, Wave Crest, etc.

We present monthly programs at our gatherings, either with a theme such as “perfume bottles and dresser items,” “candleabra”, “vases,” “barware,” etc., or we may select a particular manufacturer, or color of glass, and members bring examples to share and discuss. Occasionally we will get an outside speaker, or have a joint meeting with another glass collectors club. We did this recently with the local chapter of the cut glass society, and our members were so grateful to learn about an entirely new category of glass.

In this regard, I was wondering if any members of the Carder Steuben Club who live in the greater Los Angeles area might be willing to speak to our group. We are currently putting together the schedule of meetings and programs for 2011, and would love to have a speaker on Carder-era Steuben glass next year. What I envision would be a willing and able member bringing a selection of their Steuben pieces to show and describe, and perhaps provide a brief history of the Carder era at the company. The examples needn’t be museum-quality Cire Perdue and Intarsia pieces at all; just some kind of representative sample of the shapes, colors, and perhaps a few of the techniques that Carder used.

Our meetings are generally held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:00pm, unless that day is a holiday. A member of our club will host the meeting. We have about 9 openings for programs in 2011 at present, and the speaker might be able to schedule his or her program when we meet at the home of a member who lives in his or her area.

If anyone is interested, I would be delighted to hear from you. I can be reached at laglass@pacbell.net or (323) 937-1470. Thank you so much for your consideration.
