Exchanging Information

As reported earlier, CSC and The New York Metropolitan Glass Club have agreed to exchange information. As a result, Karl Peterson saw an announcement, apparently placed by The New York Metropolitan Glass Club

Exchange Announcement

Karl Peterson describes how it came about that he learned of the Gazette from the exchange of information and became a subscriber.

“The information exchange was entitled “NY Metropolitan Glass Club Broadens Reach With Carder Steuben Club,” and appeared in the June 20 issue of Antiques and the Arts Weekly (otherwise referred to as the Newtown Bee) published in Newtown, CT.”

Then Karl begins his subscription to the Gazette with a recounting of a Steuben experience.

Given the subject of Intarsia referenced in last week’s article, you may be amused by a story from those good old days. I attended an Early Auction in Cincinnati (actually Covington, KY) probably in the early 90’s, a time when Steuben was hot and prices were strong. I had acquired a number of pieces from Early’s over the years and had settled in for one of their two-day extravaganzas featuring several choice pieces in which I was interested including a stunning bluish-purple Intarsia vase signed by “Fred’k Carder.” I recognized Bob Rockwell, attending with his son Bobby, and thought I’d keep an eye on his bidding to see what price was right for the Intarsia vase. During an intermission I chatted with Bob and asked whether he was as impressed by that vase as was I. Yes, he said, it was a wonderful piece . . . except it had not been signed when it was offered to him privately several months earlier. Nothing more needed saying; he didn’t bid on it and neither did I.

Thanks again for adding me to your mailing list.
