The Studio at CMoG opened in 1996 and has become an internationally renowned center for glassmaking and education.  It features state-of-the-art work spaces equipped for furnace working, flameworking, kiln working, cold working, and more.  The vision is to create an environment where artists and students find the tools and the support they need to create, learn, and share.  The Studio hosts residencies and community programs, offers glassmaking classes and scholarships, and provides facility rental for artists and students.

At the Symposium this September, Richard Whiteley, Senior Programs Manager for The Studio, will offer a deep dive into The Studio’s impact on glass and its new programming.  He will also share his work and his inspirations. A tour of The Studio will follow.

Richard Whiteley is the Senior Programs Manager for The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass and part of the team supporting The Studio’s major program and facility expansion. He joined the staff at The Studio in 2019 after heading the prestigious Glass Workshop at the School of Art & Design, Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra for 17 years. He has worked in glass since the age of 16 when he commenced an apprenticeship in stained glass. He received a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the School of Art & Design, ANU, Canberra before earning a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Richard is also an active practicing artist working in cast glass. He is represented in numerous public collections and museums internationally, including The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh; Toledo Museum of Art; China Academy of Art, Hangzhou; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk; Portland Art Museum, Portland; Lowe Art Museum, Miami; and the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning.

SYMPOSIUM REGISTRATION IS LIVE!

Mark your calendars and make your reservations!  The annual Carder Steuben Glass Association Symposium will take place from September 20-21, 2024 at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York.  There will also be an afternoon activity and gathering Thursday, September 19th for those coming to Corning the day before the Symposium officially kicks off.  Please make your reservations early as there are always other events happening in Corning at this time of year and hotels do get busy.  Details of the Symposium program and hotel discounts are posted on the CSGA website here.  We look forward to catching up with you in Corning!

DONATIONS AND CONSIGNMENTS WANTED

We are soliciting donations for an auction to be held during the Saturday evening banquet dinner.  Proceeds of the auction support the Carder Steuben Glass Association website and our Steuben glass mission.  The CSGA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and you will receive a tax receipt for your donation.

You may wish to donate or consign Carder Steuben glass, post-Carder Steuben glass, glass of the same era, or glass with relevance to Corning.  Other items like books, New York state wine, or Frederick Carder items also make great auction entries. Please send item descriptions to President@steubenglass.org.

If you are attending the Symposium (and we hope you will!) you can bring donation items with you.  Or, you can arrange to have them shipped in advance of the Symposium.  The deadline for submission is September 13th.  All of your help and support are greatly appreciated.
