Imagine my surprise today when the business section of the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper featured the above headline, with yet another major Associated Press article on the closing of Steuben. Three large pictures, including one of Tom Dimitroff holding a prized piece of clear Steuben. The article was in two parts, including one of Tom Dimitroff personal experiences of going with his physician father to visit at Mr. Carder’s home. (his father, to Tom’s regret today, regularly refused Mr. Carder’s offers to just take a piece of Mr. Carder’s Steuben). The featured quote is from Jeff Purtell, when he says: “If your design department is pathetic, your costs are prohibitive and your marketing…is not successful, then your doomed, whether your making Steuben glass or Twinkies.”
Unfortunately, because I’m in San Diego right now I don’t have the equipment to reproduce the article. However, since this came from the AP wire, it probably arrived in many newspapers throughout the country today.
