What is the Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Center? Paul Gardner at his death in
1994 left an endowment, his glass collection and considerable memorabilia to
Alfred University to fund and create this Center. The Center’s purpose is to
“create a forum in which to explore the art and science of glass through lectures
and seminars; electronic information services; contemporary and archival art and
technical exhibits… (t)he Center will facilitate the study of glass art and
technology and serve as a resource for information on current technology and trends in glass artistry and industry.” For Carder Steuben collectors this Center
represents the preservation and opportunity for research in a considerable treasure trove of documents on the artistry and technical skills of Mr. Carder. In 2003 when the Club visited the Center there was an aura of great excitement with this find of precious documents. The plans for this Center are to house it in Binns-Merrill Hall at Alfred. A Palladian style room built in 1934. It will include conference rooms, offices, storage, exhibits and information services. Therefore the Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Center poses great excitement for Carder aficionados. Hopefully, Dr.
Matthew Hall and his staff at Alfred will post us with time lines, status and
progress to achieve these lofty Center goals.
