Opinions on expanding the Club’s mission keep coming in. Its obvious that our members have varying feelings about adding Modern Steuben Collectors to the Club. We continue to share your responses and welcome more. So, the Gazette will continue publishing the many comments we’ve received as long as they keep coming in.

Two messages from Tommy Dreiling of Brooklyn.

1. I Think that modern Steuben needs a club of it’d own. Our club should stick with Carder Steuben. The break in the products they produced were so great that to me they have nothing in common but the name Steuben. I agree with some of the others here, a club that’s too big spreads it’s so thin they meet the needs of nobody. So. I say Carder only, our website is one of the very best of it’s kind already, let’s not dilute it. – Tommy Dreiling

2. Alan – I have to say that I’m in the “no” camp of including post 1932 Steuben. Although they gave in a little at the end because they were getting desperate for sales, they spent decades disavowing Carder Steuben, even the early designs of his that they continued to produce in the new crystal. I believe that there have been even more books published about the crystal Steuben than the Carder Steuben so if there is really enough interest, those who collect it will found their own club. – Tommy Dreiling

DEAR ALAN–I HOPE I DO NOT START A BEE ATTACK, BUT THERE IS SOMETHING THAT NO ONE HAS MENTIONED.

I GREW UP WITH BOTH CARDER GLASS AND MODERN GLASS IN MY MOTHER’S HOUSE. WE USED THE CRYSTAL FOR HOLIDAYS AND ALL THE OTHER TIME HAD CARDER GLASS OUT ON HER BUFFETS.

I LEARNED HOW TO APPRECIATE BOTH OF THEM. BUT I ALSO LOOKED AT THEM AS WHEN A FAMILY IS SLIT UP AND BROTHERS AND SISTERS GO WITH DIFFERENT PARENTS BECAUSE OF COURT ORDERS. YEARS LATER THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS TRY TO GET BACK TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY ARE BLOOD RELATIVES AND AT FIRST IT IS HARD ON THEM ALL,””BUT”” THEY TRY.

WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM NOW. MR CARDER STARTED THE GREAT NAME OF STEUBEN GLASS AND THEN HIS STYLE OF GLASS WAS TAKEN OVER AND FOR 65 YEARS MODEREN CRYSTAL USED THE NAME IN MAKING DURING MOST OF ITS YEARS THE FINEST GLASS THOUGH OUT THIS WORLD.

WE NOW SIT AT THE CROSSING OF TRYNG TO GET THE FAMILY BACK TOGETHER, PEOPLE FROM THE CARDER ERA AND FAMILY FROM THE MODERN ERA. .IT IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE VERY HARD AT FIRST BECAUSE NO ONE IS GOING TO WANT TO STEP AN THE OTHER PARTIES TOES, BUT I THINK WE SHOULD GIVE IT A TRY. (NOT STEPPING ON TOES)

BOTH TYPES OF “STEUBEN GLASS””ARE KNOWN THOUGH OUT THE WORLD TODAY,AND BOTH TYPES HAD ITS GREAT GLASS AND ITS SO SO GLASS.

NOT TO MANY YEARS AGO THIS CLUB TALKED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF JOINING UP WITH OTHER CLUBS . WE DID NOT DO IT BUT THERE WAS TALK ABOUT IT.. SO WE NOW HAVE THE CHANCE OF LOOKING AT THE POSSIBILITY OF KEEPING THE FAMILY TOGETHER. MIGHT THIS HELP MAKE THE NAME “”STEUBEN GLASS””A STRONGER NAME DOWN THE ROAD IF WE TRY TO KEEP THE FAMILY TOGETHER?

President David,

Sue and I are Steuben collectors, who later expanded our interest to include the early Carder glass, which is now the major focus.

I think that club membership should be open to all Steuben Glass collectors. This would allow the newcomers to become familiar with the genius of Fred Carder, whose designs were seldom, if ever, absent from the catalog. A cursory thumbing through some of mine shows the 7746 candlesticks were still there in 1991, and shape 7714 in 2010 was the last survivor.

Having a session where the modern glass collectors talk about their passion would, in my opinion, add a lot to our meetings.

We are fortunate to have the Madigan book, which a comprehensive catalog of the colorless glass. Also, since there is no need to argue about color names, I do not foresee any need for major modification to our web site.
