CARDER STEUBEN OR ALL STEUBEN? That is the question
Yesterday the proposal to enlarge the Club’s purpose was set out in the Gazette. Frank Creech of Brevard, NC sent out a set of questions to a number of Club leaders. The questions follow. Next week(s) we’ll share responses and invite more responses.
“Subject: Questions regarding adding modern Steuben to the Carder Steuben Club mission
Why?
What will result if we do; what if we don’t?
Will the de facto immortal animosity of Corning, Inc., toward Frederick Carder and Carder’s Steuben generate tension among our members, in the event of a positive decision to add modern Steuben to the Club’s mission?
(Examples: The Carder Gallery is not incorporated in the CMoG-it is crowded into a small room across the street;
The very impressive Corning, Inc. Headquarters display of glass omits Carder Steuben glass;
The highly publicized huge new addition to the CMoG will not allow a special area that could be devoted to a spectacular display of the glass of Corning’s greatest glassmaker. To my mind, this would heal forever the wounds of the long-standing Carder/Corning rift.
It would also be an incredibly beautiful and fitting tribute, displaying all the glorious colors and artistic forms created by Frederick Carder for his beloved Steuben.
What are your own thoughts on this proposed mission change?
Putting modesty aside for the moment, you understand completely why I’m “picking on” YOU. More importantly, the Club’s members would benefit inestimably from your insights concerning this issue.
Cordially,
Frank Creech”
