Silver Overlay
Carder Steuben Club members Willson and Susan Craigie have been researching the topic of silver overlay on glass. They will be presenting the findings of their research at the Symposium in Corning, NY, September 19 – 20. Their presentation will include an introduction to the process and patents, the methods and makers of silver overlay. They also plan to bring a number of objects from their own collection for attendees to inspect, hold and fondle.
Program and registration details can be found at www.cardersteubenclub.org.
What’s Aurene?
Just a quick note to update some information. According to Frederick Carder there are only two true Aurenes, Blue and Gold. This is because that the composition of these two are critically different from the other colors commonly called Aurenes. For instance what is commonly called Red Aurene is actually Iridescent Red glass. The same is true of Brown Turquoise, etc. This is a case, much like that of acid cut back which is a common term whereas the correct term is acid etched. However, I hope the distinction about Aurenes will be adopted by club members.

I have been trying to research a glass sculpture that has recently come in. I haven’t seen anything quite like it. It’s got an art deco look, the glass has some air bubble inclusions, no signature or markings of any sort. It also has a lighted wooden stand which appears home-made and may not be original to the piece. Do you have any ideas? I know Steuben did a polar bear on iceberg sculpture but I don’t think it is Steuben. I am leaning towards Czech?
Do you have any clues or point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
