1. Any time you see a piece of glass with a Steuben signature or fleur de lis you should probably assume it is a fake until after you examine the glass and its shape and satisfy yourself that by objective means the glass is Carder’s Steuben. Then, the signature is an added gift. Here’s a piece from Gail Bardhan from the Rakow Library.
I recently received an inquiry about whether the following vase, signed Steuben, is indeed Carder Steuben. John Kohut said no, based on color and form, and that it is a contemporary Czech piece. I have replied to the inquirer, and directed the individual to the Gazelle Gazette section on signatures and fake signatures. I thought perhaps the members might be interested in seeing the piece.
2. We’ve had a lot of input on the question raised by Club President David Goldstein on whether the Club’s mission should be enlarged to include modern Steuben. More to come on those responses this week.
