The Year 1977
I was recently reading an article about Steuben. I found an interesting that it recommended Paul Gardner’s book, “The Glass of Frederick Carder” It noted it was published in 1971, and the writer of the article said “…it is well worth $20”.
CIRCA
Recently we were asked how Mr. Carder’s art glass could be dated. We did get information on the first date that shape numbers were created, which was published in the Gazette. In thumbing through Thomas Dimitroff’s book, Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass, I found at Appendix 3 at page 310, Approximate Dating by type of glass. For example, Plum Jade is dated “1920s on”. Gold Aurene “1904 on”.
HAVE SOME FUN
Alan,
Find attached pictures consisting of a partial group shot of my collection last in my possession in 1982. You will also find many pictures of what I think may be Steuben blanks. We’ll let the members have fun doing the research. Also, find attached several pieces of well-know art glass for your members’ enjoyment. And also I have included one of my prized Carder pieces that I no longer own — the Dragon vase. It has the Steuben Cameo mark. It was at least 12″ tall.
Your website is a joy to read. I’m going to make some suggestions to our Web Master to look at your site for some tips.
Best,
Dave Winfield, St. Louis
