Things, they are a happening:
Glass Elderhostel events in Corning in 2007
Seven events are planned for 2007 in Corning as Elderhostels, planned by our
own member, Jenny Monroe. Four are week-long Hands-on Glassmaking at the
Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass and three are a shorter programs called,
A Glass Collectors’ Compendium.

Dates for the 2007 programs are:
Hands-on Glassmaking – Currently on sale: February 25-March 2 and May 6-11
and later this fall: October 21-26 and November 4-9. Price is $703 per person
double occupancy ($85 single occupancy charge)
Glass Collectors’ Compendium – Currently on sale: April 15-18 and May 15-18 and
later this fall: November 12-15. Price is $470 per person double occupancy ($50
single occupancy charge)
Each of the seven programs includes lectures by Tom Dimitroff on 104 years of
Steuben Glass (Carder and contemporary); and Jack Martin (deputy director
retired, CMoG) on Masterpieces from the CMoG collections. The Hands-on
course includes 20 hours of glassmaking at the Studio – at the furnace, in the kiln shop and at the torch. Master teachers/artists instruct small groups daily for four days in hot glass forming, making mosaic and fused pieces, and creating beads and small sculpture at the
torch. This Elderhostel program is in its tenth year with over 500 participants to
date.
The Glass Collectors’ Compendium is a newer program in year three and includes
lectures by CMoG curators, the opportunity to blow an ornament and make a
fused piece at the Studio, and an ID clinic and ebay info. session. Jenny and
Tom created this program with the assistance of the Corning Museum of Glass staff and many local Carder Steuben friends. Some of you may remember Jenny in the early years of the annual Carder Dinners held at the Rockwell Museum as she was responsible for
education and public programs there for 23 years.
Elderhostels are life-long learning programs of college-level instruction. They
are available to anyone age 55 or older. (You can also register at a lower age!)
They happen all over the world.
Corning’s Elderhostel site is Watson Homestead, located just west 15 minutes of
Corning. It is a conference and retreat center begun 50 years ago by founder
Thomas Watson (IBM founder) on his birth site.
Elderhostels offer the highest quality learning opportunities at a modest price
and include all meals, accommodations, transportation and travel insurance. For
those Carder Steuben Club members who live near Corning, a commuter option is
also available.
You can find out more about these programs at www.elderhostel.org
